Multi-unit Continuous Ion Exchange System with Array Valves

1. Equipment Principle

It is the same with a common ion exchange system. The resin in our equipment is filled in the column and it is regenerated after using. More importantly, the resin in the entire system is divided into more units for more detailed operation. The multi utilization of the system is just dividing the large fixed resin bed into many manageable units that are respectively loaded into each small resin column.

Array valves:

Many valves and some pipelines are linked together to become a part of the ion exchange system, which is called valve array. We can switch a certain valve to realize the corresponding functions.

Multi-unit:

The resin in the entire system is divided into more units for more detailed operation.

At the beginning

While at the beginning of the treatment, lots of new resin at the outlet is lain unused without pollution load.

The multi-unit system is to subdivide the large fixed bed resin bed into multiple units and put them into multiple small columns for differentiated operation. As shown in the above Figure B, when a small part of resin in the upper layer of the resin bed fails, it is immediately removed from the system and sent for regeneration, then return to the treatment area. As long as the resin regeneration time is ensured and the resin in and out of the system are continuously synchronized, the whole system can be runned efficiently. And due to the regeneration in time of the inactivated resine, the resin can avoid being polluted by steeping long time.

At the middle

A large number of invalid resins have no treatment capacity in the inlet section, but they can't be regenerated immediately, which cause the excessively pollution.

At the end

Lots of resin still has the exchanging activity. But when the discharge can't reached the index standard, the whole resin column has to be judged as the disabled to regenerate, which cause much waste.


(3) Series operation to reduce consumption and sewage qty.

Multi-unit series operation reduces the water, acid and alkali consumption greatly and the sewage qty. as well as the treatment costs.  



(4) Stable control of product quality

During the operation process of the traditional fixed bed or other big bed system, the product quality has large fluctuation when switching the columns (mainly in concentration, conductivity, chromaticity, PH value and other indicators). The multi-unit system adopts parallel way to purify the material. The each switch is only a small inactivated column moved out and a small fresh column moved in, which effects the whole system very less, so the quality of the product is quite stable.


(5) Fully automatic operation reduces the human error and wasteful operation.

The combination of automation and process makes the operation with fully automatic and reduces the error rate and labor costs.


(6) All the valves choose the European brand with quality assurance.



The 1st set of valves installed in 2006 is still intact after 10 years of service. At present, our company provides the customers with more than 20,000 valves which are running well without quality problems.

3. Comparison with Other Equipment

(1) Comparison with full bed ion exchange system

The biggest difference between the multi-unit continuous I.E. with array valves and the full chamber bed I.E. is the increased multi-unit, which full use of water and chemicals further, so that the each consumption is further saved by more than 70% and 60%. Resin qty. is reduced by 40%; Product quality is more higher.


(2) Comparison with ISEP

· Small valve switching action, small fluctuation of flowrate and pressure. The system is protected.

· The valves can be switched arbitrarily (within a certain operating authority), more flexible fault handling.

· Step switch and flow parameters can be set together. The process operation is more precise (such as fast washing and slow washing).

· The follow-up expansion is more convenient with low investment and short cycle.

· The valves used are reliable and the system is safe.

· The ISEP equipment requires late maintenance.

5. Industry Application

· Glucose industries: starch glucose like maltose, glucose, maltodextrin, crystalline dextrose, fructose, F42, F55, crystalline fructose, etc. Xylose.

· Chemical industries: ethylene glycol and organic acids, including L-lactic acid, citric acid, VC, MSG and various amino acids, like lysine, L-phenylalanine, leucine, methionine, etc.

· Food industries: stevia, sorbitol, xylitol and other sweetners, antioxidant Iso VC sodium, etc.

· Pharmaceutical industries: antibiotics, etc.

· Thermoelectric industries: water treatment, etc.
